Darkness Swallows

by Chase Feonsdotter

To feel the warmth on your skin.
To feel the wind in your hair.
To smell the sweet scent of flowers in the sun.
This memory shall be everlasting.
He came to me in the darkness.
He didn’t ask me to join him.
His shadows engulfed me.
And I became one with the darkness.
When the light is gone,
And your soul screams from within it’s empty husk.
The dawn has come and the deep sleep beckons.
Death is my ascension.
Blood becomes wine.
Shadows speak.
Darkness swallows.
And he is my keeper.
I shall rise into the mouth of Hell.
And from there I shall conquer the world.
To be most powerful and glorified.
An artifact of immense beauty is passed into my hands.
And the Cup of Dreams has brushed against my lips.
The shadows fade into light as the pulse of life flares within me.
Yet he still yearns for my company.
Had my mind been shattered?
Splintered into a thousand tiny shards?
Or shall I never know?
I’ll sit in my room,
And stare at the plain white walls,
Until someone,
Anyone,
Answers me.
Again, he came to me.
This time he asked,
Ever so kindly,
For me to join him in the darkness,
Once more.
I remembered the sun.
The question — I answered.
Death began to devour me.
He tasted something in my blood,
And ran!
My pain was in his release.
Liquid life sprayed across the floor,
As my heart pumped crimson arches onto the wall,
And then they stopped.
All is clear now.
The path has been strewn before me.
There was one,
My savior.
In him I found solace.
His warmth enfolded me,
His love for me endured.
I remember seeing his life blood spill across the ground.
I remember the gleam of eyes that surrounded me.
I remember the smell of death on the air.
My life was gone.
With only one last glance back at a limp,
Lifeless form that had once given me so much,
I ran.
The earth seemed to move beneath my feet,
And the sounds around me were drowned out,
By the beating of my own heart.
The chase began once more.
Cold hands grasped me,
Pulling me down.
I fell for what seemed an eternity,
Toppling to the ground,
And there I cowered.
Their strength,
So much greater than mine,
They came for me with intent to steal.
I felt the burning on my throat,
And in my soul,
When they took from me what gave me life.
I saw the shadows creep closer.
Once again,
Darkness swallows.
