Whispers from the World of Darkness

Path of Anger

February 28th, 2000 by dvie

by Hastur the 7th

This is another of the paths of sin practiced by the koldun. While the path of gluttony was mainly concerned with feeding the desires of humankind, the path of anger feeds the rage of a person, causing it too swell and grow too the victim becomes a raving animal.

** MINOR IRRITATION: this causes the target too be mildly irritated by a specific thing. Not enough for frenzy, but enough too cause the victim too try and ignore the object or thing.
ยท System: the more successes, the more irritated the target becomes.

** MAJOR IRRITATION: this is an advanced version of minor irritation. It works the same way, except it can cause frenzy in garou or kindred (bedlam for changelings, catharsis for wraiths, quiet for mages, and just general insanity for hunters and sleepers.) System: the more successes the worse the effect, frenzy (or whatever) if 5 or more successes are scored.

*** DARK IMP OF ANOYANCE: this dark power summons a minor jaggling too go and irritate a specific person. This imp is immune too physical attacks and can only be seen by the victim. Many people go mad with rage from the demons mental onslaught. Others aren’t so lucky…. System: the imp remains for 1 day per success rolled. Every day, the victim must roll willpower (diff. 8) and get at least one success. Failure means they frenzy (or whatever) a both mean its permanent.

**** HATRED: this power programs the victim too react with anger too a certain person place or thing. This hatred does not have too result in violence, but it may very well could. System: the more success, the more intense the hatred (one success means tolerating the hated thing but cursing them in silence, 5 successes means they actively seek out the thing they hate too destroy it.)

***** GRIP OF ID: this is one of the most dreaded powers of the koldun. It causes the ID of a person too completely take over. Turning them into a raving snarling lunatic. This power is very devastating when used on garou, as it causes them too shift into crinos for the duration. System: the effects last 1 hour per success gained. A willpower roll (diff 7) is needed too resist. Failure has no effect and the power continues normally, a botch makes the effect permanent.

Damage - Hit me baby one more time

October 21st, 1999 by dvie

by Ivo Luijendijk

I’ve reworked that part of the entire WoD that I liked least about the characters: damage.

I can see supernatural creatures living of the extremely simplified damage system, but frankly, mortals should be given a lot more attention. I can also see this method be used by supernaturals, as it shows how an injury can be an actual hindrance. Here goes:

As mortals don’t have to worry about supernatural sources of damage, all damage done to them can be soaked normally, using Stamina. If any damage is left after this "soak-phase", the effect and severity should be determined, taking the place of the attack and the amount of successes left into account. Also, the type of damage should be considered.

Severity:
The severity of the damage done should, naturally, influence the effect as well. Not only this, but I feel it should also influence the time spend to heal the wound. I realize the problems this can cause, since time travels slowly in the WoD, when compared to the normal world, so perhaps an intermediate can be found:

1,2: Mild injury, can often be "shaken off" after the battle.
3: Effect can be ignored after one full day has past.
4: Effects can be healed in a week, unassisted.
5,6: Surgical aid needed
7+: Removed violently.

Placing:
The effect damage has to one’s system is highly correlated to the placing of the damage. A kick in the calf can be highly painful and even result in a broken bone, but it would not cause dizziness, like damage to the head does.

Type:
Bashing damage is pretty straightforward. The table below should cover that issue, or at least give some ideas. For fire damage, I suggest simply increase the damage by one or two levels. For slashing damage, make the probability or torn muscles (or even bones) lower, as for removal of the body parts.

Table: Bashing damage; when does it does what?
Place Severity Symptom Effect
Head 1 success Dizziness loss of initiative
2 successes small black out  loss of action(-s)
3 successes blackout + headache loss of all actions for the remainder of the scene + all rolls diff.+1 afterwards
4 successes unconsciousness + severe headache loss of all actions for the remainder of the scene + all rolls dive. +2 afterwards
5+ successes brain damage above, +(permanent) loss of Wits
Limbs 1 success bruises no effect
2 successes bleeders loss of all initiative for the next turn only
3 successes bruised dive. of using limb +1
4 successes torn muscles halved dice pools involving limb
5+ successes broken bone(-s) useless limb
Chest 1 success "skip a breath" loss of initiative
2 successes temporarily out of breath loss of action(-s)
3 successes bruised all movement rolls dive. +1
4 successes cracked ribs all movement rolls dive. +2
5+ successes punctured lung movement (virtually) impossible

I hope these ideas make the mortals of your games a bit more "real", or at least make the general playability of them a bit better. Also, like I stated in the introduction, I can see this system being used with Supernaturals as well. For vampires, simply add Fortitude to the Stamina roll (or replace Stamina by Fortitude in case of Aggravated damage). The other supernaturals (mortal as they (usually) are) should require even less adjustment.

Seanchai’s Corner - Creating the World of Darkness

September 21st, 1999 by dvie

by Shaun R. Baggett

Welcome to a new installment in my work for DeVita Excessum and the benefit of all the players of White Wolf’s World of Darkness system. Over the next few months I will provide this e-zine’s readers with tutorials and hints on how to create chronicles or simply improve the ones they already have going. This series will cover the formats of MET (Mind’s Eye Theater), TT (Table Top) and even Online role-play. This month (September) we will start with a few basics on working the beginnings of a chronicle.

Every story requires one thing - characters. And those characters in the WoD are brought forth by a myriad of players. How does a Storyteller go about finding players? Most often it’s a group of friends that game together normally. But sometimes it isn’t.

When without a troupe of players, a Storyteller must set out to find players that will fit his criteria. You heard me, criteria. A fundamental step for all Storytellers is to make sure that a player can handle the game he/she is planning to present. In my times of creating chronicles I often interviewed the player to find out if they would work out for the games I had planned.

How does one go about this though? First you let the player know what you’re planning to play (system-wise) and a few possible settings. Then make sure to let that player know of limitations and expectations you will have for each player within this group. Find out how this would effect the player. Don’t just take "I think it’ll be cool" for an answer. Get some genuine insight intothe player’s motivations and why he role-plays the White Wolf systems.

Now you have players, so what now? You get the players together to talk and discuss. Throw some ideas out that you have for a chronicle and allow the players to discuss them. Take notes, find out what will make this group of players feel challenged and most important - have fun.

For the October issue I will address areas on how to create a chronicle and what steps to take in formulating a workable format for said chronicle.

The Dangers of the Fae

September 21st, 1999 by dvie

by Jon Coplin

"So, like, we get to keep it tonight?" David examined the short, naked, green and wrinkly female goblin as it squatted and looked fearfully about the room of Kindred.

"Well, he did give it to me for my ‘pleasures’," replied Alex, the Tremere who had just returned from a meeting with the Unseelie Court’s Magus.

"Whatever. A pet goblin. Who’da thunk it?" David quipped as he looked at the goblin with more than a little hunger. He had heard that fae blood was dangerous, and it was also very good. He was debating the dangers of it. While he enjoyed existence as a vampire of Clan Brujah, he did miss the pleasures of alcohol and other drugs just a bit. "Well, if you’re not going to use her, can I?"

Alex considered and glanced to Rosemundi, an elder member of his Clan and the one who had taken charge of this coterie, much to David’s chagrin. She gave a slight shrug. Alex turned back to David, who was still examining the nervous gobliness hungrily.

"Go ahead."

The others of the coterie, Hakeem and Ishmael of Clan Ravnos, The Shadow of Clan Malkavian, Miriam of Clan Toreador, and Donovan, a Kiasyd of probationary status, watched this exchange with mild interest. Donovan debated on whether mentioning what he knew of Fae blood to David, but knowing his nature he decided he would refrain from comment. Also, judging from David’s knowledge of the Fae he had already expressed, he decided he might already know.

David smiled a bit wickedly. He didn’t even know where the hell they were, other than an Unseelie Court, but he was going to get some redemption out of this hellish experience. "Come here lil girl… time to get daddy’s din-din," he crooned, coaxing the gobliness towards him. She moved forward hesitantly.

"Now tilt your head back for me… I’m hungry." The gobliness suddenly brightened up and her hands suddenly gripped a withered dug and held it out for him. Several of the Kindred began snickering and others looked a bit sick.

David repressed a shudder. "No, you stupid thing, your neck," he said as he tilted her head back and sank his fangs into her.

The vitae hit with a rush. It was the greatest thing he had ever tasted. He drank slowly, savoring it. It was magic in his mouth. The rush overwhelmed him slowly as he drank and gobliness moaned. Desire grew in the heat of his Kiss, and suddenly he knew that he must have this goblin.

His head remained in a fog of desire as he licked the wounds. His voice sounded to him like it was coming through a wall. "Alex… what do you want for the goblin?"

Alex smiled to himself. "Three major boons," he replied without hesitancy.

"Deal," agreed David without even considering as he scooped the gobliness over his shoulder and carried her to the communal tub in the center of the room.

The events of the next hour I shall not repeat. Several were nauseated by the scene. Many laughed. One was impressed by the skill displayed by the enamored Brujah.

After a long, arduous session of lovemaking in the waters, David leaned forward to kiss the enchanting creatures neck, and nipped delicately, sipping again. What followed this, was even worse.

It will be described.

As he licked the wound closed and the gobliness continued to writhe and moan a bit, for such as she were not used to such pleasures, David began to shake.

Suddenly, vitae erupted from his mouth. And then his nose. It began to spray from his eyes and ears as his very body erupted in a shower of crimson rain, drenching both himself and his now panicky and frightened partner.

Most decided to stare at the walls and pretend they didn’t just see that. The Tremere just laughed and decided what to do with their assinine coterie member. Everyone agreed on one thing that night.

The Fae, from the most powerful Red Caps and Trolls to the lowliest Goblins, were indeed very dangerous.

The Seanchai’s Corner - “And there shall come a reckoning…”

August 20th, 1999 by dvie

by Shaun R. Baggett

Hunters have been within the annals of World of Darkness chronicles since the birth of Vampire the Masquerade in the early 90s. There mortals have often been scoffed at and feared at the same moment. This November heralds the end to the Year of the Reckoning product line and the beginning of a new face in the night.

White Wolf has stated this will not be a Hunter’s Hunted revamping. Something more than that lies within the hardback cover of the new Hunter the Reckoning. As to what is, is anybody’s guess. Working from clues added into this year’s YotR product line, I’ve formulated my own theory on exactly what the Hunters really are.

Guide to the Technocracy spoke briefly of mortals claiming they were possessed by angels that manifested supernatural abilities. Rage Across the Heavens speaks of a new prophecy; the Children of the Wyrm, "marriages of light and darkness." And finally, in October The Ends of an Empire, the destruction of the Shadowlands and the end of the Wraith storyline.

So, you’re reading this and wondering where is the author going with this. Where do these clues point me to?

They direct me to believe that HtR will be a transcendence of Wraith to a new ground. The surviving wraiths of the spirital nuking will have to find new "homes." Special mortals will provide host to them as both residences and tools for enacting their war upon the supernatural community of the WoD. Combined, the host and wraith will present a most dangerous force to deal with.

Reckoning is revenge, and revenge is what I believe the dead shall have.

LARP Q&A with Justin Achilli

August 20th, 1999 by dvie

by Justin R. Achilli

Q. Within the rules of MET there exists the option of using someone’s negative traits against (If known) them in a test. While this normally isn’t a problem of fairness as one must find out those negative traits through play, in the case of clan specific automatic negative traits (I.E. The Brujah getting the violent negative trait) it seems a bit unfair that because everyone knows the clan in question possesses that negative trait that they can use it constantly against them. What are your suggestions (If any) regarding this in maintaining game fairness?
A. These must be role-played. They should be guessed in challenges. If you are wrong then you are wrong If you are right then you can exploit that weakness in the individual forever after.

Q. How much blood is required to maintain an average ghoul’s (Human) ghouldom? Does a "maintaining" feeding require an entire blood trait, or is a sip enough, and if so how many ’sips’ would make up a blood trait? How much for animal ghouls?
A. It takes a full blood trait once a month in both cases.

Q. If a vampire attacks using his fangs, what manner of attack would this fall under, brawl or melee? Does it require a grab maneuver first before a bite can take place? Also, does a successful hit using fangs do a point of aggravated damage as it does in table top and would the extra damage of the higher levels of potence be added into this?
A. Brawl

Q. In the last Mind’s Eye Theatre FAQ section it was stated that there is a difference between Old Clan Tzimisce and Tzimisce antitribu, I had thought that non-Sabbat Tzimisce weren’t called antitribu, but rather Old Clan Tzimisce as stated in The Players Guide to the Sabbat 2nd edition book. Lasombra antitribu are either Camarilla or Independent, why would this be any different for Tzimisce of the Camarilla (As rare as they are) or Independents in what they would be called?
A. Different clans different standards. In the case of Tzimisce:

Sabbat Tzimisce
Camarilla Tzimisce Antitribu
Autarkis Tzimisce
Separate Bloodline Old Clan Tzimisce

Q. I know this is a silly question but, why are non-Sabbat Lasombra (And Tzimisce if it is the case) called antitribu at all? Originally both clans were non-Sabbat before the coming of the Sabbat and Camarilla sects. Shouldn’t those who ‘went against the clan’ (In this case the Tzimisce and Lasombra Anarchs) be more appropriately called antitribu? Those of the 7 ‘Camarilla clan’s who are members of the Sabbat are called antitribu (I.E. Ventrue antitribu), what are your thoughts on this?
A. It comes down to where the elders are. The Lasombra 4th Gens (and third in the case of Gratiano) belong to the Sabbat (except for Montano). The glut of Lasombra (ballpark figure of 99%) belong to the sabbat. Same goes for Tzimisce.

Q. Why do Diablerie black veins last longer in a diabolist’s aura in MET than in Table Top (2nd Edition) rules?
A. The rules differ for different circumstances

Q. Does the folks at WW
MET have any plans for putting out rules for LARP playability for the Blood Brothers, Baali, Salubri antitribu, or Harbinger of Skulls?
A. We have announced plans for MET Camarilla and Sabbat guides respectively. Any more I cannot say.

Q. Now with the release of Vampire:The Masquerade 3rd Edition, which has made some changes in various regards to the vampire world and make up(I.E. Sabbat no longer having Paths, Assamites losing the Curses, the various "sub-bloodlines" of the clans that allow for different In-Clan Disciplines, etc), does MET have any plans to put out changes or adaptations in rules to account for these changes and incorporate them into MET playability?
A. Laws of the Night Revised Edition comes out in November of this year.

Q. I have noted a great amount of misuse and misunderstandings concerning the (mis)uses of Influences. Are there any plans to update the usage’s of the various Influences as well as explaining them in more practical terms?
A. Yes, see above.

Q. Why are some of the Disciplines varying in power and original form from that of those as they were presented in Table Top Rules? Additionally, will there be updates released on the changes seen from the established MET Disciplines, and those changes made to the Discipline updates of VtM 3rd Edition? (I.E. New powers included and substituted in the Quietus, Obtenebration- The adding of Dementia to the Camarilla Malkavian’s Clan Disciplines.)
A. See above.

Q. Why in the FAQ’s in the back of the Laws of Elysium, does it state that when two Majesty users come into contact, the one with the lower generation automatically beats the other Majesty user? The Presence Discipline description, unlike Dominate, clearly states Presence uses are not affected by Generation.
A. In MET they are for balance in play.

Q. Does MET have any plans to release any source material giving a more thorough overview of the various vampiric stations (Prince, Primogen, Sheriff, Keeper of Elysium, etc) , what they entail, and what is truly expected of one in that position?
A. This is already dealt with in the Camarilla Players Guide for Tabletop (an excellent source for setting material of any LARP) but we should be including such information as to how to use these in a tabletop setting in the upcoming MET Camarilla Guide.

Q. Exactly how many Blood Traits can a vampire spend and use in a single turn? Beyond the benefit of lower generation vampires receiving more Blood Traits, does this as well allow them to spend more blood traits than higher generations in a single round like table top?
A. Goes by generation.

Q. Is it easier for a regnant to Dominate or affect with Presence, vampire’s who are in thrall to the them like in Table Top? If so, how does one work this in determining the difficulty lessening by MET rules?
A. Yes

Q. When using Summoning, how well must the Summoner know the victim, as the wording does not make it readily clear? Is you just knowing them, but them not knowing you, enough? (Known from fame, a picture, visually seeing them, etc.
A. In general you need to have talked to them, ask your Storyteller.

Q. In what category would throwing a melee weapon fall into? Melee or Firearms?
A. Missile.

Hate Filled Poem

July 16th, 1999 by dvie

by Amy Aubuchon and Jason A. Lucas
February, 1998

Please put down your hand,
And try to understand
The things I cant stand.

Online RPing I just might drop - if certain things just do not stop.
Your profile says you’re 22… so how are you a rank 5 Garou?!
I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again, there’s no way in hell you’re a
2nd Gen.
You’d be too risky to the Masq or veil to stay alive, if you had stats over five.

One of the reasons I hate to fight,
Is ’cause one fucking round takes all goddamn night!!
I have to watch everything I say, cause OOC info doesn’t stay that way.
15 dice?! What is this I see? It’s a soak roll, buddy, stop bullshitting me!
Charmed Existence and Luck and Silver Immunity..OH MY!!
I’ll bet he didn’t have ‘em when you made up that guy.

Appearance of 8?! Ha! My ASS!
Your face looks like someone dragged it through glass!
You have this gift and that one to lean onto…
If I wanted you to fuck me, I’d bend over for you.
You can tell me how many STs approved your char… but youre spewing,
Cause you’re not a real RPer in my eyes, unless you know what you’re doing.

And what’s with all these damn aboms?
And Salubri that know paths of Thaum?
Vamps; there’s nothing that Garou hate more.
They’re age-old enemies, yet you want to score.
Botch gnosis roll to become one, you only get one shot.
It seems like a tough roll, but there sure seem to be a lot.

Of all these aboms, running around on-line,
I’d like to talk to your ST, if they have the time.
Cross-bred kindred, hybrid fomor; can the "Golden Rule" be flaunted anymore?
Starting chars, extra freebies a plenty.
It seems like all chars use the rules for Mummy.

Bonus 30 freebies for starting chars?
And you wonder why I laugh and stare…
At a starting level mage with 6 arete.
And what’s this? He’s a garou? Oh what a treat.
An Assamite/Tremere/Gangrel that’s just too scary,
And you say you did it with diablerie.

That’s another bitch I’d like to address,
This diablerie shit is just one big mess.
One of the most heinous crimes a vamp can commit.
"My ST allowed it." What total bullshit.
You’re ST’s on crack, or you’ve got them in bed.
Either that or you put a gun to their head.

Sitting here at my keyboard, I can picture it all,
You with your gun, ST’s w/ 8-balls.
"ST, oh ST. Please let this be.
For I have the gun, and oh can’t you see;
That the game’s no fun unless I can win,
For if it’s not easy, why even begin?"

The ST snorts and their eyes do glaze,
Their ST mind in a zombie haze.
"An awakened Garou? I don’t see why not.
And while you’re at it, no paradox!
A Salubri/Assamite? That I can see.
Why not? Hell, I am the ST.
Dear player, on my drugs I see colors galore,
And with that gun in your hand, I’ll be your whore."

You call us stuck up, for we won’t let you roll in our rooms.
And you bitch and moan when you meet your doom.
What’s the point in playing once you’re that high?
There’s no way you could ever die.

I guess IRL you shoot hoops against first graders.
That’s how I see all you power gamers.
I could say it reflects your inadequacies in life,
An App 8 cause you can’t buy a date for the night.
The black trench and Str 5 has become so cliche,
Among people who’ve never worked out for a day.
This may sound wrong, but as it appears to me,
Many of you would be better off playing FFG.

You snicker, but just think of how grand.
I think I saw Caine walking through that land.
And many of your chars have stats that high,
You enjoy flying in rooms, and have chars that can’t die.
It will work well for you in FFG, Gen Dice and Guilds.
Sounds like fun to me.

So remember when you sit there in your ultra-char class.
You think you’re clever, but you’re just being an ass.
Your ST knows dick, it’s become plain to me.
And you, like your ST, know not a damn thing.
